Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS Is Now Available to Rent at Primes & Zooms

We've added the recently launched Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS to our rental inventory at Primes & Zooms. This lens is now available in Pune, with delivery to Mumbai as well. Announced in May 2026, this is Sony's first full-frame zoom reaching 400mm with a constant aperture throughout the zoom range — a significant departure from the well-known FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS, which remains in our inventory as well. Apart from sharing the smae focal length range however, these are two completely different lenses.

What's New Over the Older 100-400mm GM

The older FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS, launched in 2017, has been a mainstay for wildlife and sports shooters for years. It is compact, sharp, and relatively affordable for what it offers. The new f/4.5 version keeps the same focal range but rebuilds the optical formula around a constant f/4.5 aperture. At 400mm, that's a full two stops brighter than the f/5.6 of the older lens.

The trade-off is size and weight: the new lens is noticeably larger and heavier than its predecessor, at roughly 1,840g versus around 1,395g for the original. Sony has also moved to an internal zoom design, so the lens doesn't change length as you zoom, which helps with balance and weather sealing.

What It's Good For

Wildlife and Birding

The extra two stops at the tele end mean usable shutter speeds in conditions where the older lens would have forced a higher ISO or a slower shutter. Combined with Sony's latest tracking autofocus, this is built for fast-moving subjects in difficult light such as early mornings, dense forest and overcast days.

Sports and Photojournalism

A constant f/4.5 aperture all the way to 400mm gives consistent exposure as you zoom in and out during play, which matters for anyone shooting in manual or aperture-priority mode on the sidelines. The faster AF motors are designed for this kind of unpredictable, fast subject movement.

With Teleconverters

The lens is compatible with both the 1.4x and 2.0x Sony teleconverters while retaining autofocus, giving you an effective 560mm (at roughly f/6.3) or 800mm (at roughly f/9). For reach-limited situations such as distant birds, far-side-of-the-pitch action, this can make a big difference.

This is a newly launched, premium lens, and a meaningful step up in price from the original 100-400mm GM. Renting it for a shoot first and testing the AF, the weight in hand, the stabilisation in your actual shooting conditions is a good way to decide if the upgrade is worth it for your work.
